Protecting Data When Using AI
What Data Can You Share with AI Tools?
NEVER share with AI tools:
- Personal Identifiable Information (PII) of customers, employees, or partners
- Financial data including credit card numbers and bank accounts
- Health information (HIPAA-protected data)
- Trade secrets and proprietary formulas
- Unreleased product information
- Client confidential data
- Access credentials or passwords
Quebec Law 25 Compliance
Quebec's Law 25 requires organizations to:
- Obtain explicit consent before collecting personal information
- Implement privacy impact assessments for new technologies
- Maintain transparency about data collection and use
- Allow individuals to access and correct their data
- Report data breaches within 24 hours
Remember: If you're unsure whether data can be shared with an AI tool, assume it cannot. Always consult with your data protection officer.
Data Anonymization
When possible, anonymize data before using AI tools:
- Replace names with generic identifiers
- Remove identifying numbers
- Aggregate data instead of using individual records
